Childish Gambino – Me and Your Mama

Okay, bare with me here. This might not be the Childish Gambino you’re used to, but it’s worth keeping an open mind for. Think Kauai-style Childish and proceed. Recently on Beats 1 Radio, Gambino dropped a new track, “Me and Your Mama,” and confirmed his upcoming album planned for a December 2nd release, Awaken, My Love!.

If you’re an avid fan of Childish, you may have heard this song recorded from/performed at his Bonnaroo 2015 set. Sound clips floated around the internet for a while, even to the point of a fan remastering the full live performance and uploading it to SoundCloud, but many copies were taken down. The song was officially released today, being played six times in a row on Beats 1. Gambino shows off his voice with overdriven rock-style vocals over a well-blended concoction of sounds. With gospel singing, electric guitar, light percussion instruments and more Childish-like elements, the layers in this song are beautifully composed. I can’t help but point out that this song reminds me of a Pink Floyd approach to music. “Me and Your Mama” takes you through a dream sequence, briefly interrupted by a nightmare.
